Macnut Farm is a family-owned macadamia orchard in South Head, Helensville — one of New Zealand's oldest and largest commercial macadamia plantings, just 50 minutes from downtown Auckland.

This is the story of how a 105-acre dairy farm became home to 10,500 hand-picked Beaumont macadamia trees, and how two generations of one family have been growing what we think are NZ's sweetest, freshest macadamias.

Family-owned since 1989

Macnut Farm sits on 105 acres at South Head, Helensville — the kind of west-Auckland coastal land that's warm enough for macadamias to thrive, with rich soil and excellent drainage. The original orchard was planted in stages between 1980 and 1983 over what had been a working dairy farm. By the time the trees were mature, more than 10,500 macadamia trees had taken root.

The current owners have been running the orchard since 2008. Helen, of MacNut World Group Ltd, manages the farm and product side. Her daughter Flora handles marketing and online sales — and is usually the friendly voice on emails and texts.

Why we chose the Beaumont variety

While most commercial macadamia orchards in Australia and Hawaii grow drop-harvest varieties (the nuts fall to the ground and are collected mechanically), our orchard is planted predominantly with the Beaumont hybrid — a variety that holds its nuts on the tree until they're hand-picked.

Hand-picking takes longer and costs more, but it gives us:

  • Sweeter, creamier kernels — Beaumonts are known for a richer, more buttery flavour than commercial drop-harvest varieties.
  • No ground contact, no bruising — every nut comes off the tree at peak freshness, never touching mud, leaf litter, or insects on the orchard floor.
  • Consistent quality — only the best kernels make it into the bag.

Spray-free, sustainable practices

The orchard is committed to growing macadamias with minimal environmental impact. We don't spray with synthetic chemicals, we manage pests through orchard health and biodiversity, and we work to keep the soil and surrounding native bird life thriving. The result is a nut you can feel good about eating, and a farm that supports the West Auckland environment rather than depleting it.

Visit the orchard & cafe

Macnut Farm is open to visitors. The on-site cafe (Macnut Cafe) sits under a covered verandah looking out over the orchard, with a paved terrace, easy parking, and a peaceful walking track around the lake. We're open Tuesday to Sunday, 8am–4pm, at 914 South Head Road, Helensville — about 50 minutes' drive from downtown Auckland.
